Islands & Bridges

Every person is it's own island.
Then we learn to built bridges that connect to other islands.
And we try not to burn them.
For bridges are good for you, for whichever of the many reasons.

I've been quite diligent in building and enforcing my bridges,
almost obsessive sometimes.
And gradually I've learned that, as good as bridges are, they have weight.
And an island can only hold so much until it starts to sink,
if it didn't respect it's own capacity.
And more recently I've also learned that,
if the fire came from the other side of the bridge,
sometimes you just got to learn to let go of that bridge to protect your island.
And know that it is 'selfish' or 'weak' to do so.
Protecting your own sanity is a noble cause.
